George Aaron Barton papers
Scope and Contents
The George Aaron Barton papers is comprised of the private papers of George Aaron Barton. The collection, which ranges from 1859 to 1949, holds clippings, personal memorabilia, correspondence, bibliographical material, and manuscripts of lectures, sermons, and prayers. The collection provides a look into the personal life and academic career of Dr. Barton, a professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages at Haverford and Bryn Mawr. The collection is composed of two boxes, each of which is divided into eight folders. Box 1 contains two folders of newspaper clippings and personal memorabilia and certificates from 1859-1942. It also contains a variety of correspondence: Palestinian letters from 1903, biographical correspondence, and correspondence with learned societies. Additionally, there are printed biographies and 2 photographs of Dr. Barton. Box 2 contains bibliographical material and manuscripts of lectures, sermons and prayers. A large portion of the second box is assorted correspondence. The correspondence covers a wide range of topics: a revision of Religions of the World; Haverford’s Collection of Cuneiform Tablets; Dr. Barton’s portrait to Bryn Mawr College and other gifts; the disposition of Dr. Barton’s library, etc. There is also a copy of the Alumnae Bulletin from 1942 and a program of the University of Miami’s Winter Institute of Arts and Sciences from 1944. George Aaron Barton was the author of many publications on Semitic origins, writing, and religion. He taught at the University of Pennsylvania, Haverford College, and Bryn Mawr College. This collection contains material pertaining to his academic publications, as well as information on his personal life. It would be of interest to a researcher studying the life of Dr. Barton, or the study of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages at the end of the 19th century.

Biographical / Historical
George Aaron Barton was born in Canada in 1859, of English and American descent. He later became a naturalized American citizen. Barton graduated from Haverford College, A.B. 1882 and A.M. 1885, and Harvard University, A.M. 1890 and Ph.D. 1891. He taught in the Friends School in Providence R.I., from 1884 to 1889. Dr. Barton returned to Haverford College as lecturer for two years and at the same time joied the Bryn Mawr faculty as Associate Professor of Biblical literature and Semitic Languages, 1891. He taught at Bryn Mawr continuously as Professor of Biblical Literature and Semitic Languages until 1922 when he joined the faculty of the University of Pennsylcania as Professor of Semitic Languages. In addition, Dr. Barton was director of the American School for Oriental Research at Jerusalem, 1902-03, and at Baghdad, 1921-34; also Professor of New Testament Literature and Laguage at the Divinity School of the Protestant Episcopal Church in Philadelphia,, 1921-37. An acknowledged minister of the Society of Friends (Orothodox) from 1879-1918, Barton was ordained as a Deacon in the Episcopal Church in 1918 and priest the following year. He was the author of many publications on Semitic origins, writing, and religion.
