Scope and Contents

The collection consists of correspondence and diaries of Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) and Angela Darkow. Sanders was a professor of Greek at Bryn Mawr and Darkow was a student of Greek. The diaries and letters cover a thirty-year span, starting with their lives at Bryn Mawr and following their careers and relationship. There is also some correspondence related to Angela's sister Marguerite and the Ferris Family. There is one letter from M. Carey Thomas, president of Bryn Mawr.

Biographical / Historical

Henry Neville Sanders was born in Edinburgh Scotland in 1869. He studied at Edinburgh University, Gottingen, and the University of Toronto. He joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College in 1902 as Associate Professor of Greek and became Professor of Greek in 1905. He remained at Bryn Mawr until his retirement in 1935. He died in 1943. Angela Darkow received her AB in Greek and Latin from Bryn Mawr College in 1911, her MA in Greek in 1912, and her PhD in 1919. Angela's sister Marguerite received her AB from Bryn Mawr in 1915. Angela was briefly married to someone with the surname of Ferris. She also died in 1943.

Overview

Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) studied at Edinburgh University, Gottingen, and the University of Toronto prior to joining joined the faculty of Bryn Mawr College in 1902. Sanders remained at Bryn Mawr until his retirement in 1935. Angela Darkow (AB – 1911; MA – 1912; PhD – 1919) studied Greek and Latin at Bryn Mawr College. Aditionally, her sister, Marguerite, received her AB from Bryn Mawr in 1915. The collection consists of correspondence and diaries of Henry Neville Sanders (1869-1943) and Angela Darkow documenting their lives at Bryn Mawr, careers and relationships. A small part of the collection pertains to Marguerite, the Ferris Family, and M. Carey Thomas, president of Bryn Mawr.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

This collection was donated to Bryn Mawr College Special Collections by Dickinson College in 2010. It had apparently been held by Dickinson since 1967 when it was donated by the Moyerman family.
