James Leuba papers
Scope and Contents
The James H. Leuba papers house a collection of papers of James Leuba, a professor of experimental psychology at Bryn Mawr College, and Howard Gray, a professor of history at Bryn Mawr. The collection, which ranges from 1896 to 1950, primarily consists of research notes from the two professors.
The collection is housed in one box that contains twenty-eight folders and three notebooks.
Leuba's materials include research notes and notebooks, a small amount of correspondence regarding religious beliefs, and reprints of articles by Leuba and others. Gray's materials include research notes and a typed draft of The Printing of Literary Classics in the 15th Century. Folder 4 contains letters sent to Leuba in response to two questions regarding religions, needs and hopes that he had published in Open Court (April 1905) and Ethical Addresses (January 1905). Folder 11 contains 2 copies of Leuba’s published (printed) doctoral thesis: Studies in the Psychology of Religions Phenomena (both with his annotations). Folder 13 contains summaries and reviews of A Psychological Study of Religion. Folder 15 contains a copy of Flournoy’s Le genie religieux. Folder 17 consists mainly of published theses presented to the Protestant theological faculty of Montauban. Folders 2-7, 9, and 21-28 probably belong to Professor Howard Gray. They are filled with highly detailed customs records regarding the shipment of wool in the 15th century—not an interest of Leuba’s.
This collection is unique in that it contains research materials from two distinctly different subjects. It would be a valuable resource for those interested in the research subjects of Leuba and Gray, providing especially useful insight into experimental psychology and psychology/history of religion.
