Scope and Contents

The Valentine Muller papers is comprised of the manuscripts and other papers of Valentine Muller, a former professor of archaeology at Bryn Mawr College. The materials in the collection are primarily from the 1930s-1940s.

The collection is housed in one box containing 13 folders.

The first folder contains biographical and publication material. Folders 2 through 10 contain a variety of published and unpublished manuscripts and typescripts in English and German. Muller’s research focus was on the relations between Oriental and Mediterranean cultures. Manuscripts that are known to have been published have been marked. Folder 11 contains miscellaneous notes and research photographs. Folder 12 contains miscellaneous unlabeled photos and one album of photos of contemporary sculpture. Folder 13 contains official certificates and degrees.

This collection would be of use to those interested in Greek Sculpture; Oriental Archaeology; Mesopotamia. It should be noted that some of the material is in German, and may not be accessible to everybody.

Biographical / Historical

Valentine Muller was born in Berlin in 1889. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1915. He taught at the University of Berlin from 1919-1931, except from the years 1921-1923 when he was a Traveling Fellow with the German Archaeological Institute in Rome.

In January of 1931, Muller resigned to become Associate Professor of Archaeology at Bryn Mawr College. Muller taught at Bryn Mawr until his death in 1945. He authored many publications and specialized in the relations between Oriental and Mediterranean cultures.
