Jane Browne Haines scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Jane Haines scrapbook contains the one volume scrapbook of Jane Haines, Bryn Mawr College class of 1891. The scrapbook, which ranges from 1888-1930s, contains a large volume of personal memorabilia.
The scrapbook consists of one volume. The most noteworthy feature of this scrapbook is the large number of quite beautifully handwritten entries including class-related songs (scores for many also written in; note esp. Pallas Athena) and the script of “The Princess.” Haines also includes quotes—either overheard, attributed, or specious—from M. Carey Thomas (as English lecturer) and various professors, including Shorey and Andrews. There is also a sketch of the “character of Dr. Andrews—guessed by a survey of his countenance.” The scrapbook also contains many informational booklets from later Bryn Mawr years, mainly the 1920s.
The Jane Haines scrapbook is interesting for the wide timespan that it covers. Unlike most of the other scrapbooks in the Bryn Mawr Collection, this scrapbook includes materials from far beyond Haines’ college years. The scrapbook binding is fragile, but the pages and items are in good condition.
