Scope and Contents

The Elizabeth Congdon scrapbook collection houses the two scrapbooks kept by Elizabeth Congdon, class of 1902. The scrapbooks, which cover 1898-1901 and 1901-1902 respectively, document Congdon’s social life at Bryn Mawr, as well as many off-campus events.

The scrapbook consists of two volumes. Volume 1 covers Congdon’s freshman- junior years (1898-1901), and contains an assortment of material, including her room assignments for 1898 and 1899; homemade valentines; programs from the Bryn Mawr Class Play 1898-1901and the Bryn Mawr Glee and Banjo Club performances 1898-1900; BMC admission material 1898; photographs (1902 basketball team and room); letter from M. Carey Thomas: “Elizabeth Congdon: please don’t put your milk outside the window”; May Day 1900 material; Princeton memorabilia, including dance cards 1901-1902, sports clippings, and campus songs; newspaper clippings of Bryn Mawr students putting out fire at Professor Scott’s house (Girl’s Fire Brigade of Bryn Mawr); and handwritten notes from Mary Gwinn. Volume 2 covers Congdon’s senior year (1901-1902), and contains calling cards; telegrams from her Princeton boyfriend; programs from the Bryn Mawr class play and musical recital 1901-1902; a program from the Princeton Glee, Banjo and Mandolin Clubs Performance 1902; clippings regarding the 1902 Denbigh fire; and the Bryn Mawr Commencement program 1902.

Congdon’s scrapbook evidences the busy social life of a Bryn Mawr student at the turn of the 20th century. In addition to the Bryn Mawr memorabilia, this scrapbook also documents many Princeton and U-Penn events. It is interesting as a record of the sort of inter-collegiate social life a Bryn Mawr student could have if she were so inclined.
