Edith Wetherill (Ives) scrapbook

 Collection — Volume: 1
Identifier: BMC-9LS-2

Scope and Contents

The Edith Wetherill scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Edith Wetherill, Bryn Mawr class of 1892. The scrapbook is very large and contains materials from 1888-1934, both well before and after Wetherill attended Bryn Mawr. The scrapbook primarily consists of photographs and newspaper clippings, giving a very comprehensive vision of Bryn Mawr from the 1890s well into the 1900s.

The scrapbook is housed in one large volume. Wetherill included many hand-written sections of poems, lectures, lyrics, and quotations from friends and Bryn Mawr faculty. Newspaper clippings concern a large number of Bryn Mawr College and women’s education related events, as well as wedding announcements and obituaries of a variety of people connected to the College. The scrapbook also has a comprehensive covering of class songs and reunions of the class of 1892 after graduation. Particularly remarkable is the enormous number of photographs contained in this scrapbook, most of which are large, of excellent quality, and record images of Bryn Mawr theatrical productions and the class of 1892. There are a great number of casual photographs, as well as numerous portraits. Many of the photographs are the same group of students throughout various years, and there are many photos of dorm rooms.

This scrapbook is a unique volume that provides a visual history of Bryn Mawr throughout the 1890s and into the 1900s. Almost anyone of note during this time period in Bryn Mawr’s history is likely mentioned in the scrapbook, including M. Carey Thomas, James Rhoads, Ume Tsuda, Charlotte Angas Scott, etc. It would be of value to anyone interested in Bryn Mawr’s early history.
