Scope and Contents
The Ellen Sudders Young papers houses the scrapbook and photo album of Ellen Young, Bryn Mawr Class of 1926. The scrapbook contains materials from 1922-1930 and largely consists of newspaper articles. The photo album contains photos from circa 1924-1926.
The collection is comprised of one oversized scrapbook and one small photo album.
The scrapbook comprises one volume. It mainly contains extensive newspaper clippings from May Day, Commencement, and fellowships and academic awards every year, 1922-1926. This book also contains a very large number of articles regarding European Fellowships and various other academic awards each year. There is also a sizeable collection of valentines and Christmas cards, and newspaper articles about various Bryn Mawr events. Noteworthy items include: three photos of Bryn Mawr buildings in the snow, one photo of an unidentified Mawrter in casual dress holding May Pole streamers, a 1923 newspaper clipping regarding the traditional burning of notebooks at bonfire, and a handwritten script for “Freshman Show: Behind the Curtain.” The photo album is small and contains primarily contains photos of campus buildings and some campus events. The pictures are not of the highest quality, but the photo album is in good condition and well organized, making it easy to view. There are little to no captions in the book.
This collection offers a less personal, but very extensive view of Bryn Mawr life during the 1920s. The multitude of outside newspapers in the scrapbook provides useful insight into not only Bryn Mawr events and opinions, but also local and world events. This collection would be a valuable resource for anyone interested in 1920s Bryn Mawr, especially those interested in fellowships and academic awards.

Biographical / Historical
Ellen Sudders Young was born November 28th, 1984. She attended the Philadelphia High School for Girls before entering Bryn Mawr College. She graduated from Bryn Mawr with degrees in mathematics and physics. From 1926-43, she worked in the Sterility Testing Department of the Biological Laboratories of Sharp and Dohme. Following this, she served as a Department Head at Reichel Laboratory from 1944-46. Young also served as a missionary at the Scripture Memory Mountain Mission in Emmalena. Kentucky. Young died on December 25, 1904.
