Marie Leyendecker Cashel scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Marie Leyendecker Cashel scrapbook houses the one volume scrapbook of Marie Leyendecker, Bryn Mawr class of 1944. The scrapbook roughly covers the years 1937 to 1944. It contains a great deal of material detailing the social life of an active high school and college age young woman—dances, teas, parties, theater, restaurants, outings in Pennsylvania, and NYC.
The scrapbook consists of one volume. Much of the material dates from Leyendecker’s high school years at Pelham Manor, NY, during the late 1930s. There is also some material relating to WWII: a “War Map of the World,” campus reaction to Pearl Harbor and particular movements of marine units. Related specifically to Bryn Mawr, there is a letter from the College regarding Leyendecker’s acceptance (as well as one from Smith); poems re: life at Bryn Mawr; course cards (1940-42); playbills; dance cards; “Order of Procedure for Freshmen, 1940-41;” SGA booklet (1940-41); BMC handbook (1940-41); Freshman Show flower cards, booklet from the inauguration of K. McBride as President (1942), and “Wilkie for President” group on campus. Of special interest, perhaps, is an autographed photo of Guy Lombardo; a playbill from “International Casino” autographed by Milton Berle; and a variety of political pins.
The scrapbook contains some of the typical Bryn Mawr memorabilia, but also contains a great deal of material that is not found in other scrapbooks. It would be of use to a study of how WWI affected college campuses. However, the scrapbook is too fragile for use by researchers or for exhibition. Some of the items in the scrapbook may be of interest for exhibition, and could be removed.
