Tirzah Nichols scrapbook
Scope and Contents
The Tirzah Nichols scrapbook contains the one volume scrapbook of Tirzah Nichols, Bryn Mawr class of 1896. The scrapbook spans the years from 1892 to 1902 and contains a lot of material, mostly musical programs and Bryn Mawr memorabilia. It provides useful insight into Bryn Mawr at the turn of the century.
The scrapbook comprises one volume. There are a large number of programs from various symphonies and musical performances in Philadelphia and other cities. The Bryn Mawr-related material is mostly song lyrics and play programs, but the scrapbook also contains some items concerning the Baldwin School and Haverford and Swarthmore Colleges. There are also a large number of hand-drawn, often painted, name/table cards from various dinners.
Late 19th century Philadelphia saw a surge in musical venues, as a well as a new variety in genres of music being performed. This scrapbook highlights the experience of someone exploring the music of Philadelphia. It would be of value to those interested in the social life of Bryn Mawr students outside of campus. It should be noted that the scrapbook is in very fragile condition and most pages are out of the binding.
