Mary Grace Kilpatrick scrapbook

The Mary Grace Kilpatrick scrapbook houses the one volume diary/scrapbook of Mary Kilpatrick, Bryn Mawr class of 1900. The scrapbook spans Kilpatrick’s freshman-junior years at Bryn Mawr, from 1897-1899, and highlights all aspects of college life. The collection consists of a notebook containing diary entries and scrapbook materials. The diary/scrapbook contains programs/playbills, newspaper clippings, and many hand-drawn invitations to Bryn Mawr events. Highlights of the diary/scrapbook include several playbills, from plays at Bryn Mawr and in Philadelphia; a sketch of Mary Kilpatrick, Autumn 1897; a hand-written poem about Marion Park, 1897; various newspaper clippings 1897-1898, including a visit to the States by Prince Albert of Belgium and shortage of condensed milk; various class song lyrics, 1897-1899; color program from “Peace Jubilee”, Philadelphia, October 1898; and an invitation for Mary Kilpatrick to tea with M. Carey Thomas, to meet the Bryn Mawr School Children, November 1898. She also notes in passing that she heard W.E.B. DuBois’ lecture “on the colored question.” This diary/scrapbook highlights Bryn Mawr life at the turn of the century. Many of the materials in the diary/scrapbook are typical Bryn Mawr memorabilia; however, the format of the scrapbook (including diary entries) is unusual. It would be of use to anyone interested in Bryn Mawr history at the turn of the century.
