Biographical / Historical

The Self-Government Association at Bryn Mawr College was founded by students in 1892. The College therefore became the first institution of higher education in the United States to give students responsibility to not only enforce rules of behavior upon themselves, but also for decide what those rules should be. Under the Bryn Mawr College Honor Code and Self-Government Association Constitution, Bryn Mawr College undergraduates take responsibility for governing themselves in academic and social matters, as well as playing an active and fundamental role in the life of the College. The SGA represents the concerns and needs of the undergraduate body to the administration. Twice a year, the SGA holds meetings for all undergraduate students to attend and share proposals, ammendments to the Constitution, and resolutions.
