Identifier: BMC-RG12-H-MacCoy

Scope and Contents

The M. Helen MacCoy papers house documents related to the travel of Mary Helen MacCoy (Bryn Mawr A.B. 1900) and other members of her family in Europe. The bulk of the material in the collection is from between 1900 and 1928.

The collection is housed in one document case containing 12 folders.

Folder 1 contains song sheets: the 1900 Class Song (which differs from that published in Songs of Bryn Mawr College); ’99 to 1900, words by Cora Hardy; “Oral” songs ’98; and many others. Folders 2-7, and 10-12 are all related to MacCoy’s travels or her family’s travels. Folder 2 contains outgoing correspondence, 1928, which records European travel, with the emphasis almost entirely on tourist sights. There is special comment made on Hans Christian Andersen shrines. This folder also includes photographs and postcards. Folders 3-4 contain incoming correspondence from 1928-29. There are letters from family members in school and/or travelling in Europe. Folder 5 contains guidebooks. Folder 6 contains a photograph album with photos from a summer vacation with family and friends in Maine. Folder 7 contains photographs and postcards from Europe, circa 1928. Folders 10-12 contain Marjorie MacCoy’s travel diary from 1912-1913, which covers travel in Germany, France, Italy, etc. and includes photographs and postcards. Helen MacCoy accompanied Marjorie on this trip. It should be noted that Helen and Marjorie’s relationship is not identified. Folder 8 contains programs and leaflets. Folder 9 contains a juvenile story of Marjorie MacCoy.

This collection would be of interest to those interested in travel, especially European travel during the 1920s. The photographs in this collection may be especially helpful in enriching the descriptions in the correspondence.
