Washington Monthly Meeting Records

By 1807 a Meeting for worship and a Preparative Meeting were set up in Washington D.C., these meetings were under the care of Alexandria Monthly Meeting. After the 1828 Separation, Orthodox Friends attached to Indian Spring Preparative Meeting in Maryland.

By 1876, Orthodox Friends began meeting back in the District in private homes. Baltimore Monthly Meeting created a "Committee for the Accommodation of Friends in Washington" in 1893. With the consent of Baltimore Quarterly Meeting, Orthodox, and at the request of Baltimore Monthly Meeting, Orthodox, a Monthly Meeting was officially established for Orthodox Friends in Washington in 1899. The same year construction of a Meeting House began at the corner of 1st and C Streets. The Federal Government obtained this land for public use and another Meeting House was built at 13th and Irving Streets by 1906. The Irving Street Meeting house was occupied until 1945 and was sold two years later. The funds from the sale were used to purchase a meeting house for the Adelphi Meeting wihich was formed from the merger of Washington and College Park in 1956.

Friends Meeting of Washington DC (Florida Avenue) was established as an independent monthly meeting in 1930. It became a United meeting in 1945.
