Biographical/Historical
Robert M. Gavin, Jr., was appointed Interim President of the College following Tom Kessinger's term. He served for the academic year July 1996-June 1997. Gavin had been a member of Haverford's Chemistry faculty and director of computing. He was appointed provost in 1980. In 1984 he left Haverford to become president of Macalester College which he led until 1996. At the end of his interim presidency at Haverford, he was credited with providing "inspired leadership in many areas, particularly in planning and soliciting an architect for the natural science project." (Haverford Alumni Magazine, Fall 1997, p. 3) In June 1997 Gavin was named president of the Cranbrook Educational Community.
