Haverford College Gold Coast Training Program collection
Scope and Contents
This collection contains correspondence regarding the Haverford College Gold Coast Training Program. Many of the correspondences are newsletters sent by the student workers, Steve Polgar and Norman Green, as they moved around Africa’s West Coast. Detailed in the correspondences is a new form of construction referred to as “Rammed Earth housing,” with Green making several requests for more information on the subject. Two documents relating to Douglas V. Steere are also included at the end. Also included are inquiries by H.K. Addae to the American Friends Service Committee, regarding material aid in Awudome. The correspondences are dated between July, 1954 and May, 1955.

Historical Note
The Haverford College Gold Coast Training Program, begun in 1955, was a joint venture between the Ford Foundation and Haverford College. Using monetary aid from Ford, four to six men from Haverford College were given funding to spend time in the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast of West Africa. This program was also considered a suitable alternative to service in the U.S. military by draft boards.
