Scope and Contents

The collection consists of records of three Friends' conferences: the first, the All American Friends Conference held in Oskaloosa, Iowa, in 1929; the second, the Friends World Conference of 1937, held in Swarthmore and Haverford, Pennsylvania; and the third, the Friends World Conference held in Oxford, England, in 1952.

All American Friends Conference, Oskaloosa, Iowa, 1929. Records, 1926-29. This conference was the genesis of the Friends World Conferences. Records include membership, lists of committees, reports, financial papers, addresses, mailing pieces, transportation arrangements, and correspondence concerning the conference.

Friends World Conference, Swarthmore College and Haverford College, Pennsylvania, 1937. Records, 1934-1937. Minutes of the committees in charge of the arrangements for the second Friends World Conference in September, 1937. These papers relate to the 10,000 or more Friends, representing 50 yearly meetings and Quaker groups and 17 "independent" meetings in the United States, including 224 Friends from abroad, representing 23 countries, who participated in the conference. Included are printed materials, circulars, estimated cost of travel, financial reports, lists of delegates, records of contributions, minutes, addresses, and other material.

Friends World Conference, Oxford, England, 1952. Records, 1949-1952. Records of the Friends World Conference include minutes of the general purposes, program, publicity, and world conference committees; reports of discussion and worship-fellowship groups; instructions to hosts and hostesses; press reports; reports on study booklets; Woodbrooke gathering; and other miscellaneous reports. All of the material is mimeographed.

Biographical / Historical

This collection contains materials from the All American Friends Conference (1929) and two Friends World Conferences (1937 and 1952). After the Friends World Conference in 1952, the Friends World Committee on Consultation [ongoing] was formed to "to act in a consultative capacity to promote better understanding among Friends the world over."

Acquisition

The Friends World Committee on Consultation records were donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1966 by the American Friends Service Committee through Lois Stanton (1004A), in 1937-1938 by Anna Griscom Elkinton (1004B), and in 1952 by the Friends Library, London (1004C).
