Scope and Contents note
Correspondence of Joshua L. Baily with prominent Friends and others, 1847-1915, dealing chiefly with humanitarian activities, temperance, peace efforts, penology; a narrative account of a visit to Burlington by Loyd Baily in 1836; notes on Philadelphia Yearly Meetings 1844-74 by Joshua L. Baily, and in 1871, by Jacob Elfreth; account of the separation among Friends because of the views by Gurney and Wilbur; articles written and lectures given by Joshua L. Baily, etc. Papers referring to the Kansas Freedmen's Relief Association include letters from Elizabeth Comstock, Laura S. Haviland, and others. In the collection are testimonials and memorials in regard to the death of Joshua L. Baily.

Biographical note
Joshua Longstreth Baily (1826-1916) was a Quaker merchant in the dry goods business. He attended all the American Yearly Meetings between 1845 and 1855, keeping notes. He was an effective speaker. He contributed to African American causes, was interested in peace issues, and worked toward temperance, establishing temperance coffeehouses in Philadelphia. He was treasurer of the Mohonk Arbitration Conference, president of the American Bible Society, and was affiliated with the Pennsylvania Prison Society for 66 years. He was an author on topics related to Bible study and temperance.

Also in 975: Notes on Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, 1827-1917. 3 notebooks, one largely by Joseph Walton, 1830-61 (MS., one by Joshua L. Baily, 1844-56 (typed copy, made by Albert L. Baily, Jr.; ca. 23 MS. items laid in), and one by Jacob R. Elfreth of Lansdowne, Pa., 1827-1917 (extracts from his diary, made by him and typed by Albert L. Baily, Jr.). Note: These notebooks were given to the Quaker Collection in 1962 and and 1964.
Joshua L. Bailey's Haverford College senior thesis written in 1912 entitled "Preliminary Biometical Observation on the Evolution of Goniobasis" is available in the Haverford College archives.
