 Collection
Identifier: HC.MC-1180

Scope and Contents

Represents, in large measure, the Cooper and Wills families of E. Newbold Cooper and the Green, Hawkins, and Sharpless families of Margaret Hawkins.

In the E. Newbold Cooper part of the collection, there are two principal authors: Dorothy Nyhart Cooper (1898-1990) and E. Newbold Cooper (1898-1957). Dorothy Nyhart Cooper's papers include correspondence, a manuscript, and other papers. Her correspondents include: Hugh Borton, Harold Ickes, and Nelson Rockefeller. These papers develop topics relating to Cooper’s family, career, and activities. E. Newbold Cooper's (1898-1957) papers include correspondence, a diary of a trip in 1925, including to Woodbrooke, a Quaker study center in Birmingham, England, papers relating to his tenure at Girard College, poems, speeches, and biographical information. His correspondents include: Werner Eichholz, Dwight D. Eisenhower, August Lorey Sr. & Jr., and Paul Schulz. Of interest are the letters of August Lorey, Jr. written from Germany offering his views of Nazi Germany, including discussions of eugenics, and post-World War II Germany.

There are two journals of Rebecca K. Cooper, several commonplace books which belonged to Susan Richardson, Hannah Wills, and Ann Wills. There are photographs of the Cooper and Nyhart families.

In the Margaret Hawkins part of the collection are papers of U.S. "Indian Agent" Albert L. Green (1846?-1947), who lived in Beatrice, Nebraska. These include a copy of his manuscript on languages of the Otoe-Missouria Tribe and Iowa Tribe (Baxoje). Here too are Green-Hawkins family letters and genealogical information.
