Identifier: HC.MC-1257

Scope and Contents

This collection contains letters mainly to Dorothy Beresford from her sons Peter and David, as well as letters between David and Peter, and various other correspondents tied to the Beresford family such as Peter’s wife Natalie and daughter Loretta. These letters were primarily written between 1929 and 1932, although they span to 1949. The Beresford family originated in England, but first David and later Dorothy emigrated to New York, while Peter traveled between various continents during his career as a ship’s assistant engineer, eventually settling in Australia. The letters touch on a wide range of topics, including simple family matters such as David’s daily life in New York, Peter’s experiences traveling between various port cities in Scotland, England, Australia, China (including mention of Sino-Japanese hostilities), New Zealand, South Africa, Panama, etc., the effects of the Great Depression, and the progress of technology.
