Biographical Note

Thomas Kite Brown Jr. was born on May 19, 1885, in Westtown, Pennsylvania, the son of Caroline Cadbury (1851-1914) and Thomas Kite Brown, a teacher at Westtown Boarding School. His siblings were Richard Cadbury, Bertha, Shipley, Carrol Thornton, and Lydia Caroline. He attended Haverford College, where he was elected to the Founders Club and the Phi Beta Kappa Society. He was also captain of the gymnasium team and was on the varsity football team. He continued his education with graduate studies in Berlin, at the University of Pennsylvania, and at Harvard University. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard in 1920. He worked as a German professor and with the Bureau of Personal Administration in New York City, was executive director of the American Association for Organizing Family Social Work, and served as a Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce in New Jersey. He was the editor of the Bulletin of Friends Historical Association. He died in 1944. In 1896, the Brown family opened Back Log Camp, for paying guests who came to fish and camp. Richard Cadbury Brown graduated from Haverford College in 1897. He later became a teacher at Westtown Boarding School, Wilmington College, Bootham School in York, England, and the Friends Select School in Washington, D.C.

Bertha Brown graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1904, where she studied History, Economics, and Poltiitcs and held a Foundation Scholarship. After leaving Bryn Mawr, she was a student of stenography and type writing at the Perice School in Philadelphia, and then served as a stenographer. Lydia Caroline Brown graduated from Wellesley College in 1912.
