Biographical / Historical

Allen C. Fischer was born to a Quaker family and grew up in the subarbs of Philadelphia. He graduated from Haverford College ('59) with a degree in political science and went to the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and served in the U.S. Army. Fischer eventually married Renate Belville and became the director of marketing for Maritz Travel Co. He published hundreds of poems, the first by the Haverford-Bryn Mawr Review. Fischer was eventually nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Fischer was very involved in the Haverford community, serving as a member of the Corporation of Haverford College, an admissions representative, class chair, and deferred giving class representative. Both Fischer and his wife gave regular monetary gifts to the College. Later in life, Fischer was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, and ultimatly died from post-operative pneumoia on October 20, 2018. The Allen C. Fischer 1959 Atrium in Roberts Hall is named in memory of him.

Allen C. Fischer graduated from Haverford College in 1959 and remained an active member of the community. This collection includes poems by Allen Fischer, personal correspondence, and materials relating to his poetry.

Arrangement

The original folders have been grouped into four series: loose poems, manuscripts, correspondence, and personal papers. Within the four sections, the folders are arranged according to alphabetical order and then date. Bound volumes have placed into two serieses: literary journals and books. They are arranged in alphabetical order and then by date.

Gift of the Fischer-Belville Trust and Estate, November 2021.
