Historical Note
The Philosophy Born of Struggle Conference was founded by J. Everet Green and Leonard Harris in 1994. The impetus for the conference came from an event organized by Green on February 17, 1994 at Rockland Community College in Suffern, New York, when students and faculty gathered for a philosophy discussion entitled "The Search for Alternatives: African American Perspectives on the Human Situation" for the purpose of bringing awareness of the African American experience to the campus. The discussion created great interest on campus, and led to the creation of a full-day conference on October 21 of the same year.
The title of the conference comes from a text authored by Leonard Harris. Many important thinkers and writers in the field of Africana Philosphy spoke at the Philosophy Born of Struggle Conference, sometimes in multiple years. For many years, the conference continued to be held at Rockland Community College, but it has also been held at other US institutions.
