Historical Note
The certificate was printed by Kensington Art Studies, Brooklyn, New York. The police officers commended were involved in the apprehension of Charles McElvaine, the first man to be publically executed in the electric chair. Edison's design was faulty, and McElvaine's death was gruesome, thus intensifiying the debate over capital punishment.
