Scope and Contents

This collection contains materials relating to the Shipley and Strawbridge families of Philadelphia. Much of the collection is made up of scrapbooks and photograph albums from the 1890s through the 1970s. In addition to these scrapbooks and albums, the collection also includes a large amount of correspondence, personal papers, photographs, and diaries from members of the Strawbridge and Shipley families. Also included in the collection are items related to the department store chain of Strawbridge and Clothier. These scrapbooks, letters, diaries, and papers provide a valuable, personal insight into a period of nearly a hundred years of Philadelphia and Germantown history through the eyes of the Strawbridge and Shipley families. The correspondence included in the collection is primarily comprised of letters written between close family members and spouses, discussing general activities and well-being of members of the family. A large portion of the letters are between Anna Estes Hacker and her fiance, and later husband, Francis R. Strawbridge written during their engagement and times when they were apart. These letters and the other correspondence in the collection provides an intimate look into close family life in Philadelphia from the late 1800s through the mid 1900s.

The diaries and journals included in the collection primarily were written by Francis R. Strawbridge, Walter P. Shipley, and Anna Emlen Shipley. They date from the 19th to 20th century, and vary in depth and length.

The bulk of the personal papers in the collection involve Anna Strawbridge. They include speeches Strawbridge gave, and poetry she wrote and published. Also included in personal papers are items from other members of the Strawbridge and Shipley family, such as guestbooks, school books, and other similar items.

The papers related to Strawbridge and Clothier, a department store chain based in Philadelphia from the late 19th century through the end of the 20th include pamphlets and other papers related to anniversary celebrations of the company, as well as papers related to its eventual closure and sale in 1996.

The majority of photographic material in the collection is found in the albums and scrapbooks, but other items include photographs not in albums, several daguerreotypes, stereoscopic slides, and a collection of silhouettes. This material includes items relating to the Shipley family, Strawbridge family, and Strawbridge and Clothier.

The bulk of this collection is comprised of scrapbooks and albums, dating from the 19th to 20th centuries. The scrapbooks contain memorabilia from events, photographs, newspaper clippings, and more. The photograph albums show vacations, family homes, and everyday scenes. The large amount of volumes is arranged by date when known, and taken together they provide and intimate look into an extended Quaker family’s everyday experiences over a period of more than one hundred years.
