Papers include letters between Carleton family in Ireland and Carleton family members in Philadelphia and Kennett, PA and other relatives, giving news of family and friends, 1752-1785; letters from Benjamin Chandlee of Philadelphia and John and Thomas Chandlee of Dublin, 1707-1775; a letter from Mary Peisley, Friends’ minister traveling to America to Elizabeth Fuller Shackleton in 1754, telling of the trials of her journey; letters of Abraham Shackleton, Elizabeth Carleton Shackleton, Mary Shackleton Leadbeater, and Richard Shackleton of Ballitore, Ireland, and from Roger and William Shackleton of York, England, giving news of family and friends and from Jane Watson telling of a visit to Thomas Carleton in 1791.

Biographical / Historical

The Carlton, Chandlee, and Shackleton were related Quaker families of England, Ireland, and United States. Abraham Shackleton (1696-1771) founded a school at Ballitore, Co. Kildare, Ireland in 1726. His son Richard Shackleton (1726-1792) later took charge of the school and married Elizabeth Carleton (1726-1804). Their daughter Mary (1758-1826) married Williamm. Leadbeater. Thomas Carleton (1699-1792) of Kennett, (Chester County) Pa. was the son of Mark and Susanna (Watson) Carleton. Mary Peisley Neale (1717-1757) was a minister in the Society of Friends.
