Biographical Note

Margaret Mary Clark Haines (fl. 1910-1946), an English Quaker and member of Durham Quarterly Meeting of Friends, was the second wife of Joseph Haines, an American Quaker with whom she lived in Philadelphia. Some examples of her activities in England are as a speaker at the Young Friends' Week-end Conference, 1919; a member of the Wensleydale Trampers, Sidcot Tramp, Ulster Tramp, Leominster Tramp, and Kendal Tramp (hiking groups); an attender at the Conference of Young Friends at County Wicklow, 1912; a visitor at the English Young Friends' Foreign Mission Campaign, 1913; and a member of the visiting English Young Friends at Dublin Yearly Meeting, 1913. This information is garnered from event announcements, and there are more than here listed, probably indicative of Clark's attendance. She apparently traveled to Calcutta and Ceylon as part of a missionary activity in 1913, as evidenced by a letter from Albert Taylor. She was clearly involved deeply with missionary activities as indicated by a whole folder of Mission Board minutes in the 1930s and 1940s held in Philadelphia. She was a member of Germantown Monthly Meeting in Philadelphia.
