Samuel B. Haines correspondence
Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of the single folder of the correspondence of Samuel B. Haines. These letters were written primarily from army camps in Virginia and Maryland during the Civil War, mostly to his mother, Deborah Bunting Haines, and a few to his father, Josiah Lippincott Haines. They describe battles and encampments, and include many vivid details concerning the war. There are also a few letters from family members, including one from Howard Lippincott Haines, Samuel's brother, who matriculated at Haverford in 1860, and from Josiah Ramsay, the doctor who was with Samuel Haines in a camp near Belle Plain, Virginia, when he died of typhus.

Biographical Note
Samuel Bunting Haines (1840-1863) was born on November 19, 1840, the son of Josiah Lippencott Haines (1811-1892) and Deborah Bunting Haines (1819-1900). Haines enlisted in Company B, Pennsylvania 121st Infantry Regiment on 16 Aug 1862. He died at an army camp near Bell Plain, Virginia, on February 23, 1863, and was buried on March 4, 1863, in Philadelphia.
