Biographical Note
Herbert White was born in Manhattan, New York. He graduated as an "outstanding student" in math from White Plains Community College in 1951, and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a bachelor's in engineering from The City College of New York in 1960. He completed his master's of engineering in 1962 at New York University.
White began his career at the dawn of the nuclear age as a product design engineer developing Geiger counters and other nuclear equipment at Electronic Products Co. of Mt. Vernon, New York, from 1950 to 1960. He then went on to develop electronic switching systems at Bell Labs in Homdel, New Jersey, from 1960 to 1966.
In the final stage of his career, White worked for Burroughs Corporation, now Unisys, from 1966 until his retirement in 1993. At Burroughs, he developed various electronic equipments and systems, including the Illiac IV Super Computer deployed at NASA's Ames Research Center in Mountain View, California.
During his career, White was the sole inventor on three patents, wrote several published technical papers, presented several technical papers at technology conferences, and presented a technical paper on the Illiac IV Super Computer at the First Joint USA - Japan Computer Conference in Tokyo, Japan, in 1972. He died in 2018.
