Scope and Contents

This collection contains poems written by Agnes Tierney, Margaret Scattergood, Maria Scattergood, and an anonymous author for a "godspeed sendoff" for the families of Rufus Jones and Henry J. Cadbury at the moment of their departure from the community. The collection also contains a letter from Peggy Hoag to Mary Hoxie Jones, written in 1989, sent with the typewritten copies of the poems.

Biographical Note

Rufus Jones (1863-1948) was a prominent educator, Quaker historian, and member of the Society of Friends. Born in 1863, he was a birthright Quaker. He attended Haverford College, where he was later a professor of philosophy. He was editor of the American Friend for 20 years. His influence helped define the liberalism and mysticism of modern Quakerism. Rufus Jones died in 1948.

Henry Joel Cadbury (1883-1974) was a biblical scholar and Quaker historian. He was a professor at Haverford College and Harvard University. He was the director of the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) from 1928 to 1934 and 1944 to 1960. He delivered the Nobel Prize lecture in 1947 on behalf of the AFSC and the British Friends Service Council, when those organizations accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the Religious Society of Friends.
