J. Henry Scattergood letters
Scope and Contents
This collection contains the letters of J. Henry Scattergood written to Arnold Rowntree between the years of 1901 and 1934. According to an envelope included within the collection, the two had met on a ship from Jamaica to New York sometime in the 1890s and became fast friends. Scattergood was Rowntree's best man at his wedding.

Biographical / Historical
J. Henry Scattergood (1877-1953) grew up in Powelton, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. His family moved to 3515 Powelton Avenue in 1880, when he was a few years old, and he lived there for more than 40 years. The Scattergoods were a prominent Quaker family whose members were associated with numerous Quaker causes. After several years in business, Henry became treasurer of Haverford College in 1916, and treasurer of Bryn Mawr College in 1927. He also served as 'United States Commissioner of Indian Affairs' under President Herbert Hoover. Scattergood was well known for his cricket playing abilities.
Arnold Rowntree (1872-1951) was the son of John Stephenson Rowntree and Elizabeth Hotham of York, England. In 1907, he married Mary Katharine Harvey. From 1910 to 1918, Rowntree was a member of Parliament, representing York. After facing defeat in the 1918 election, Rowntree stepped away from politics. He was the director of Rowntree and Co., his family's chocolate company, and served as director for a variety of British newspapers. He was a Quaker.
Walter Hallowell Jenkins was a storekeeper in Gwynedd, Pennsylvania, served as Clerk of Philadelphia Yearly Meeting, and operated the Friends Book Store in Philadelphia. His wife, Esther Peterman Lukens, was the daughter of Alan R. and Mary B. (Butcher) Lukens. Of their five children, only Sarah married. The family had many connections to Swarthmore College.
