Elizabeth Stanley Trotter letters
Scope and Contents
Set of two letters by Elizabeth Stanley Trotter, both dated 2/6/1930 and both addressed to one “Mrs. Gummere.” The content of the two letters is very similar: one seems to be a draft of the other. Trotter asks Gummere for genealogical information about the Hooton, Trotter, and Stanley (or Standley) families in Philadelphia as she attempts to research the ownership of a plot of land on which Trotter warehouses stand in Philadelphia. She also asks for biographical information about John Gummere, and about general information about Scotland and Ireland in conjunction with her work on “the Leach papers.”

Biographical note
Elizabeth Stanley Trotter (1873-1956) was born October 13, 1873, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was an author with an interest in Quakerism. She was a contributor to The Atlantic Monthly, and the author of "The Children of Light: Being the story of George Fox, the Quaker and of Oliver Cromwell, the Soldier and of William Penn, the Settler and some of those who followed them," a narrative poem which was never published. Trotter's interest in Quakerism stemmed from her ancestors, who had been Quakers who had been disowned for "marrying out" (marrying non-Quakers). Trotter married William Henry Trotter in February of 1898, and the couple had at least one child, Charlotte (b. 1899). Elizabeth Stanley Trotter died in 1956.
