Everett Mendelsohn "Middle East Conflicts:" Reflections

Everett Mendelsohn was born on October 28, 1931 in New York, New York. He earned a B.S. from Antioch College in 1953 and went on to obtain his M.S and PhD from Harvard University in 1960. He began as a professor of History of Science at Harvard later that year, focusing his work and teaching on “the history of biology and the relationship between scientific progress and its social and historical contexts” (Lemann and Shah 2023) and remained there until his retirement in 2007. He founded the Journal of the History of Biology in 1968, acting as its editor-in-chief for 30 years, and co-founded the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Committee on Science, Arms Control, and National Security and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences’ Committee on International Security Studies. He was an active member of the American Friends Service Committee, participating in trips to Cambodia and South Vietnam in 1968 to investigate the toll of chemical warfare and in 1980 to investigate and assist in peace efforts in various Middle Eastern countries.

Mendelsohn married Mary Maule Leeds in 1954. They had three children, Daniel, Sarah, and Joanna. Following their divorce, Mendelsohn married Dr. Mary B. Anderson in 1974. He died on June 6, 2023 at the age of 91.
