Chiefly letters (1799-1853) by Richard and Abigail Mott addressed to Margaret Allinson (later Parker), John Cox, William Rotch, Jr., Samuel B. Toby and others, as well as letters (1799-1856) to Richard Mott from Richard Carpenter, John Cox, Jonathan and Thomas Evans, Joseph John Gurney, John Pease, William Rotch, Jr. and others. Topics discussed include Elias Hicks and the Separation of 1827-1828, John Wilbur and the Wilbur-Gurney controversy. This collection also includes letters of other members of Mott family as well as some miscellaneous manuscripts, ALS, receipts, illustrations, photographs, and portraits.

Biographical / Historical

Richard Mott (1767­-1856) was the son of James and Mary Mott. In 1785 [or 1787] he married Abigail Field (1766­-1851) of Purchase, N.Y. Richard was acknowledged as a minister in 1787 and traveled in 1799 with Philadelphia Friends to New England. The Motts were residents of Mamaroneck and Purchase, N.Y. and later Burlington, N.J. They were both clerks of their respective Monthly Meetings and he served as clerk of New York Yearly Meeting.

Arranged alphabetically by correspondent. Box 1 primarily contains letters and other papers written by Abigail Field Mott (1766­-1851), Maria Mott (d. 1817?), Richard Mott (1767­-1856) and Richard F. Mott. Box 2 contains letters and other papers written to members of the Mott family by others.
