This collection is composed of the single, handwritten diary of Elizabeth Browett. The cover of the diary reads: “Diary of a Poor Quaker Seamstress, 1833-4, being a pathetic record of monotonous penury.” Entries focus on social calls, descriptions of Quaker meetings, Browett’s health, and her work as a seamstress in London.

Biographical Note
Elizabeth Browett (1788-1849), a Quaker seamstress, was born in 1788 in Buckingham, England, to Hannah and Joseph Browett, a Quaker tailor. Browett’s father was disowned by the Society of Friends in 1804, and Browett spent her early life migrating to various meetings with her mother through Gloucester, Buckingham, and Oxford. Browett settled in Ratcliff, London, in 1833, where she began writing in her diary. Elizabeth Browett died in Ratcliff, London, in 1849, at the age of 61.
