Biographical Note

Robert Lindsey (1801-1863) was born May 18, 1801, near Leeds, England, the son of Richard and Mary Lindsey. He was educated at Ackworth School and after leaving he entered his father's business. He was later apprenticed in a Quaker family. At the age of 21, Lindsey started in business on his own as a draper. In 1828, he married Sarah Crosland. Lindsey first spoke as a minister in 1840, and three years later was recorded a minister by Brighouse Monthly. In 1850, Robert Lindsey travelled with Benjamin Seebohm from Michigan to Iowa as part of a five-year-long tour in the United States. After returning briefly to England, he then left again for Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. He returned to England in 1856, but traveled again to the United States in 1857. During the winter of 1862-1863, Lindsey became ill, and he died on June 20, 1863.
