Biographical Note

Ann Moore (1710-1783) was born Ann Harbut or Herbert on November 16, 1710, in Pennsylvania. According to an account made by the Friends of Gunpowder Monthly Meeting, Moore’s mother died shortly after her birth and she was placed among Friends. Moore married Walter Moore, who was later disowned or resigned from the Society of Friends. The couple had four children, whose birthdates are unknown. Moore was recognized as a minister in 1738, and traveled throughout the British colonies in North America in that capacity. In 1760 and 1761, while en route to Great Britain, Moore’s ship was taken captive and carried to Spain. In 1778, Moore traveled through Pennsylvania and New York, passing through military lines. Moore died on November 11, 1783, in Baltimore, at the age of 73.
