John Pemberton diaries
Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of two volumes of handwritten extracts, copied by Joseph Elkington, date unknown, from John Pemberton's original diaries. The first volume describes Pemberton's visit to England from 1750 to 1754, the second volume is composed of daily entries dated from 1778. The majority of entries in both volumes describe Quaker meetings attended and social visits with Friends and family.

Biographical Note
John Pemberton (1727-1795) was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on February 27, 1727, the youngest son of Israel Pemberton Sr. and Rachel Read. Pemberton went to England for his health in 1751, and accompanied John Churchman on the voyage and on the preacher's travels in England. Pemberton first spoke as a minister in Penzance, Cornwall. He was involved in Native American issues and was present at the Treaty of Easton in 1757, along with British colonial authorities and chiefs of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois Confederacy), Lenape, and Shawnee nations.
Pemberton married Hannah Zane in Philadelphia in 8th month, 1766. During the American Revolutionary War, in 1777, Pemberton was taken prisoner as a non-combatant in Winchester, Virginia. Pemberton went again on religious visit to Europe in 1794, where he became ill and died. He was buried in Pyrmont, Germany, 1 month, 31, 1795.
