Scope and Contents
This collection includes two original, handwritten diaries of Sarah Frances Smiley. The first diary is dated the summer of 1857 and the second is dated 1859. Entries describe Quaker meetings, Smiley’s ongoing struggles with her religious conviction, and her dedication to God.

Biographical Note
Sarah Frances Smiley was born in Vassalboro, Maine. She was brought up among Quakers, became convinced, and joined the Friends at an unknown date. In 1866, she was recorded a minister. Smiley wrote an evangelical essay, “Who is He? An appeal to those who regard with any doubt the name of Jesus. . .” in 1868. She withdrew from Friends, resigned her membership, and received water baptism in New York in 1872, though she did not join another denomination. Sarah Frances Smiley died in 1917, at about 87.
