Scope and Contents

This collection is comprised of the single volume scrapbook of Elizabeth U. Willis. The volume includes photos and clippings about Elizabeth U. Willis and Sarah F. Underhill, photos of the Underhill family, clippings, illustrations, and portraits of Quakers, meeting houses, and Quaker birthplaces. Quaker autographs and letters are included as well. Letter writers include Samuel Fothergill, Anne Mott, David Sands, William Allinson, William Dillywn, William Rickman, J. Stephenson, George Jones, Lindley Murray, Richard Mott, and John Barrow. Confederate money, fractional currency, colonial money, excerpts of prayers and testimonies, and embroidery and cross stitch samples are also included.

Biographical Note

Elizabeth Willis (1831-1897) was born on September 29, 1831, in Pennsylvania. She married John Willis in Columbiana, Ohio, on October 5, 1854. The couple had ten children: Allen (1855-1932), Cynthia Ann (1856-1946), Mary Margaret (1858-1928), Simon (1861-1928), Ephraim (1862-1930), Benjamin (1864-1941), Elmer W. (1867-1926), Franklin (1869-1929), Joseph (1871-1955), and Leland (1874-1908). Elizabeth Willis died February 17, 1897.

Custodial History

Originally the scrapbook of Elizabeth U. Willis, it was passed to her niece, Elizabeth Wood Taber, by Sarah Underhill in 1898. Elizabeth Wood Taber passed on the scrapbook to Eleanor Wood Taber.

Acquisition

The Elizabeth U. Willis scrapbook was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1951 by Eleanor Wood Taber.
