Walter Hinchman portfolio
Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of the single volume portfolio of sketches and photographs of Walter Hinchman. The portfolio includes the many of the plates used in Hinchman’s book, “Sketches & Poems.” The sketches were done during Hinchman’s time at a machine shop in Ohio at the end of the Civil War and on a survey trip (1867-1868) for a transcontinental railway from Kansas to California. There are sketches of the Pennsylvania Steel Company (1869), animals, flowers, trees, people, and landscapes.

Biographical Note
Walter Hinchman (1845-1920) was born July 25, 1845, near Doylestown, Pennsylvania, the son of Morgan and Margaretta S. Hinchman. He was educated at Friends' boarding schools in Ohio, and attended Earlham College in Indiana. In 1861, Hinchman enlisted in the Northern forces during the Civil War. He worked in a machine shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, and in 1866, a machine shop in Philadelphia. He also worked as a draftman for Jonathan Dunn in Washington, D.C. and for the Patent Office. In 1867, he joined a surveying expedition to St. Louis, Missouri. After the expedition was over, he returned to the east coast via Panama, and settled in New York City. He published a single book, "Sketches and Poems," using materials from his travels. He died in June of 1920, in New York City.

The Walter Hinchman portfolio was donated to Special Collections, Haverford College in 1953 by Margaretta S. Hinchman.
