Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of the single volume scrapbook of Samuel A. Purdie. The volume includes clippings of his writing, including a series of essays on “Quakerism in Dixie,” a series entitled “Journal of a Conscript,” and a series entitled “For the Pioneer, Sojourn in the Land of Secession after a Collapsed Rebellion.” The clippings are pasted into the Back Creek Monthly Meeting school attendance record books.

Biographical Note
Samuel Alexander Purdie (1843-1897) was born on March 5, 1843, in Columbus, New York, the son of Samuel Purdie and Waity Howard. He married Gulielma Maria Hoover (1850-1936), and the couple had one son, Joseph Moore Purdie (1880-1958). The family went on a Quaker mission in Tamaulipas, Mexico, in 1895. Samuel Purdie died on August 3, 1897, in San Salvador, El Salvador.
