Biographical Note
Mary Rhoads Haines (1818-1905) was born in 1818, in Springfield, Pennsylvania. She married William Ellis Haines, a Philadelphia doctor, in 1841. The couple had one child, Hannah, in 1845. William Haines died a year later. Mary Rhoads Haines taught in Quaker schools in Philadelphia and Westtown after the death of her husband.
