Biographical Note
John "Jack" Flagg Gummere (1901-1988) was born in July, 1901, in Pennsylvania, the son of Henry V. Gummere and Lydia F. Gummere. John F. Gummere graduated from Haverford College in 1922, and then received his Ph.D. in Indo-European languages from the University of Pennsylvania. He married Gladys Wheeler Barnes in 1931. He taught at William Penn Charter School in Philadelphia, and served as headmaster of the school from 1941 to 1968. After his retirement, Gummere taught Latin and English at Haverford and contributed a weekly column, "Words, Etc.," to The Philadelphia Inquirer. He was a long-time member of Haverford College's Board of Managers, and was a founder of the National Association of Independent Schools. John Flagg Gummere died in 1988.
