Scope and Contents
This collection is comprised of the single volume manuscript memorandum (and a single photocopy) written by Margery Mickle's husband (name unknown). The manuscript recounts Mickle's illness with "tumorous pollypus" in the corner of her right eye and her nose. Her husband writes about the series of operations she underwent to remove the tumors, the re-emergence of the tumors after a number of operations, and the doctor's recommendation that they remove her right eye. The manuscript describes Mickle's decision not to undergo the operation to remove her eye, and recounts her final days, including visits from friends and family, and some quotes from Mickle's last days, as well as a description of her final moments and death in 1809. The manuscript provides a detailed account of medical practice at the time, as well as the traditions surrounding death and dying.

Biographical Note
Margery Mickle (1748-1809) was born April 13, 1748, the daughter of Robert Friend and Hannah Price. She was married in October of 1776, and lived in Gloucester, Pennsylvania. She died in October of 1809.
