Historical Note
The Provident Society for Employing the Poor was founded in 1824 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Its purpose was to "assist and encourage deserving poor widoes and mothers of dependent chidlren, by giving them employment in sewing during the later weeks of the winter, when their wants are most pressing, from the exhaustion of their slender supplies." The organization was dissolved in 1924. The decision was made to end it that year because it was the organization's 100th year, and remaining funds were to be distributed to similiar organizations.
