Biographical Note
John S. Haines was born circa 1818-1819, the son of Reuben Haines and Jane Bowne, in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In his adulthood, he was a trustee of the Germantown preparative Meeting. In 1850, he married Mary D. Cope, the daughter of Henry Cope and Rachel Reeve Cope. The couple lived at Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and had three sons: Reuben, Henry C, and Francis C.
