Scope and Contents
This collection includes one volume of the Evesham Social Reading Circle minutes, originating constitution, and by-laws, and rules of order which have been signed by more than 70 founding members. The minutes contain committee reports, finances of the organization, and descriptions of the debates or readings held at the meeting.

Historical Note
The Evesham Social Reading Circle was founded in 1864 in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. The Circle was supported by paid memberships. It is unknown when it ended. A preamble to its constitution states that its mission was for "mutual empowerment in Elocution, Composition and Debate, and for enlarging our fund of general intelligence, in the pursuit of which objects, we desire to exhibit a due consideration for the opinions and feelings of others, to maintain a perfect command of temper in all our intercourse, to seek for truth in all our excercises; and have adopted for our government the following Constitution, By Laws, and Rules of Order."
