Historical Note

The Whittier Fellowship Committee was formed in 1911 by Quakers from New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, and Baltimore to promote the life and message of John Greenleaf Whittier. The original letter proposing the committee states: "Realizing the common problems which young Friends are facing in this age of transition, we have felt that it would be helpful is those of both branches in the Eastern yearly meetings who have been especially studying these questinos should meet for four or five days of united study and fellowship."

It also supported the work of a Whittier Fellowship Guest House in Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, that was established in 1912 as an "American Woodbrooke," represented by three branches of Quakerism, on the success of previous pilgramages to the site of Whittier's land.
