Biographical note

Joseph John Gurney (1788-1847) was born at Earlham Hall, near Norwhich, England on August 2, 1788, the son of John and Catherine Gurney. In September 1817, he married Jane Birkbeck and the couple had two children. He was a Quaker minsiter and an influential prison reformer, and visited prisons in England, Ireland, and Scotland, and published writings concerning prison conditions. In September, 1827, he married Mary Fowler. He traveled to the United States, the West Indies, Canada, and Denmark during 1837. He again visited the U.S. in 1840, and made with John Adams and President Van Buren. Joseph John Gureny died in January, 1847 from a fall from his horse at age 59.
